Science Creates Outreach’s mission to inspire young scientists is accelerated by Royal Society of Chemistry grant

As an independent charity, Science Creates Outreach’s work is propelled by supporters of our mission. Their generosity injects resources into our programme, helping us to ignite the scientific curiosity and aspirations of the next generation.

As such, we are thrilled to share that Science Creates Outreach has been awarded a ~£10,000 grant by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) through its Outreach Fund. The RSC is committed to advancing excellence, connecting chemical scientists and shaping the future of chemistry for the benefit of humanity, and this grant has been given in recognition of our work.

Outreach: The future of science

In a world fighting to secure its future against the threats posed by resource scarcity and the global climate emergency and healthcare crisis, scientific innovation is key to providing solutions to our challenges. This makes nurturing young people’s minds and scientific potential crucial to a brighter future for us all, and Science Creates Outreach is on a mission to do precisely that.

Our programme includes tours of the Science Creates Old Market deep tech incubator, interactive workshops, and engaging discussions with entrepreneurs - immersing young people in groundbreaking innovation, and giving them real insight into what it is like to be a scientist and founder. These experiences show learners that pioneering work is done by people just like them and encourage them to envision their roles in shaping the future.

Funding: mission acceleration

We will be using this grant from RSC to expand our curriculum-linked workshops, purchase additional scientific equipment and lab supplies, and reach even more young people by publicising our workshops and visits to educators and community groups across Bristol. This means a broader range of exciting learning experiences, and that all students, regardless of their background, will have the opportunity to be inspired.

This programme expansion will also give civic scientists within the Science Creates ecosystem greater opportunities to engage with the community. Volunteering with our charity allows them to share their knowledge and experiences to inspire curious and ambitious young minds - a rewarding and stimulating experience for young learners and pioneering scientists alike.  Explore Kelpi’s enriching experience of volunteering at our STEM Day at Science Creates event to find out more.

Dr Geri Kitley from the Royal Society of Chemistry, shares: “Our aim is to engage different audiences with the chemical sciences through the projects we fund, so we’re excited to see how this programme develops and enables school aged students nearby to have inspiring interactions with chemistry.”

Speaking on the exciting news, Science Creates Outreach’s founder, Charlie Proctor, says: “Science Creates Outreach owes a lot to The Royal Society of Chemistry. They have supported us from the very beginning and made a huge impact on the STEM education and career aspirations of the young people in Bristol.”

With Science Creates Outreach having grown out of an earlier outreach project funded by the RSC in 2017, we are very grateful to have the RSC continue to support our important mission. As we approach our first anniversary of being a registered charity this funding will accelerate our impact for the next year. We have already welcomed over 2000 learners and we look forward to welcoming many more in the years to come.
