Diversity & Inclusion

Our approach to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Our mission

At Science Creates Outreach, our mission is to increase science capital among young people, connecting them with real-world science, real STEM professionals, and real career opportunities they might not otherwise encounter. We do this by:

  • Demystifying scientific careers and showcasing the broad range of opportunities available within the STEM sector.

  • Diversifying the future faces of science by prioritising working with young people from underrepresented backgrounds.

  • Empowering the next generation of confident problem solvers, giving young people the skills needed to tackle some of humanity’s most pressing issues.

We exist because access to STEM isn't equal. Young people's sense of whether science is “for them" is shaped by who they see doing it, whether anyone in their life works in STEM, and whether they've ever had the chance to try it hands-on. Our work is designed to close that gap.

Who we work with

We deliver hands-on STEM workshops to young people aged 9–18 across the South-West, prioritising:

  • Pupils eligible for Free School Meals

  • Schools in deprived areas

  • SEND students

These groups are consistently underrepresented in STEM education and careers; our programme is designed with them specifically in mind, not as an afterthought.

How we put this into practice

  • We work with schools in advance of every session to understand any access, communication, or medical needs within a group, and adapt our delivery accordingly.

  • We're mindful that our venue, The Learning Lab, is a working laboratory environment, and we consider physical accessibility for pupils with mobility or sensory needs when planning sessions.

  • We work with STEM professionals from a wide range of roles and backgrounds — not only scientists — so that young people see a realistic, varied picture of who works in STEM and what that can look like.

  • All of our safeguarding practices apply equally and without exception to every child we work with, regardless of background, ability, or circumstance.

An evolving commitment

This is a live statement of our current approach, and we expect it to develop as our organisation grows. If you have questions, as a school, partner, funder, or member of the public, contact us at info@sciencecreates-outreach.co.uk.
